Iron Reagents for Water Analysis: Ferrous, Ferric or Total Iron?

An order for “iron reagents” needs more detail than the parameter name. Confirm the iron fraction, sample preparation and analyser method before selecting a replacement solution or kit.

Online Reagents is backed by PMA’s chemical-manufacturing experience of more than 52 years. Send your specification online to discuss suitable supply, availability and quantity before confirming an order.

Define the iron result you need

Ferrous and ferric describe oxidation states. Dissolved and total iron describe different sample or analytical fractions. These terms are not interchangeable. The method and sample preparation determine which result the test can report.

Copy the full method designation and result label from the instrument documentation. Do not assume that a colour reaction alone measures every form of iron present.

Identify the reagent chemistry

Our iron reagents page covers ferrozine, phenanthroline and TPTZ requirements. The chemistry must suit the instrument’s approved procedure, including any reduction or preparation steps.

Hach’s Water Analysis Handbook illustrates how iron methods have their own requirements. A reagent with a familiar chemistry name is not proof of universal instrument compatibility.

Match range, format and dosing

Provide the working range and reporting units, plus the current reagent specification. Identify whether the analyser uses a solution, powder or complete kit. Include bottle size, connections and dosing information where relevant.

The manufacturer’s procedure controls how the material is used. Do not change reagent strength or dosing to compensate for an unexplained result.

Keep comparisons method-aware

A comparison between an online analyser and a laboratory result is useful only when the reported fractions and sample procedures are comparable. Differences may reflect method selection, preparation or sampling rather than a faulty reagent.

Document those conditions before investigating a discrepancy. A controlled check is more informative than repeatedly changing the analyser’s settings.

Order with a complete specification

Send the analyser make and model, iron fraction, chemistry or method number, range, existing product details and quantity. Ask about the required format and supporting documentation. Online Reagents can discuss the specification before availability and supply are agreed.

Can I change chemistry without changing anything else?

Do not assume so. Different chemistries can require different programmes, preparation or reagent sequences. Confirm suitability with the instrument’s approved method before ordering or making a change.
