How to Verify Online Water Quality Analysers with Portable Field Testing

Portable water analyser field verification

Portable field testing can give an online water-quality analyser an independent, practical comparison at the point where a reading needs investigation. It does not replace continuous monitoring, the site method or the acceptance process. Used carefully, however, it can help a team separate a likely analyser issue from a sampling, process or operating change.

This is most useful during commissioning, following maintenance, when a trend looks unexpected or when fouling and drift are suspected. A portable check needs to be representative: compare like with like, record the conditions and investigate differences before changing the fixed analyser.

Why independent field checks matter

Fixed analysers provide ongoing information without requiring an operator to be present for every reading. Their performance can still be affected by the sample point, flow, temperature, fouling, reagents, probe condition, calibration status and response time. A portable measurement provides a second observation when those factors need attention.

The aim is not to declare one instrument right and the other wrong from a single result. A well-planned comparison creates evidence: what was sampled, where and when it was sampled, how each instrument was checked, and whether repeat readings agree. That evidence supports a sensible next action.

Calibration, verification and validation

These terms are related but do different jobs. Calibration establishes or adjusts an instrument response against suitable reference values. Verification is a check that the instrument is still performing as expected against a defined reference or comparison. Validation is the broader evidence that a method or arrangement is suitable for its intended use.

For an online analyser, a portable field result is usually part of verification or investigation rather than a substitute for the analyser manufacturer’s calibration procedure. The site’s approved procedure, method and acceptance criteria remain the authority for any decision.

Parameters that can be compared in the field

A portable water-quality kit can support field comparison for parameters such as dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, turbidity, ammonia and conductivity, provided that the chosen instrument and method are suitable for the parameter and sample matrix. The important point is to compare measurements obtained from as close as practical to the same water at the same time.

Different techniques may not respond identically, especially where the sample is changing or contains interferents. Treat the result as a structured comparison, not an automatic pass or fail. Where the discrepancy matters, follow the site procedure and consider a laboratory or specialist investigation.

A step-by-step comparison workflow

  1. Choose a representative point and time. Take the portable measurement as near as safely practical to the analyser sample point. Avoid comparing water from a different process stage or a sample that has stood long enough to change.
  2. Check instrument readiness. Confirm the portable instrument’s calibration status, battery, consumables and any reference standards required by its procedure. Record the online analyser’s status, alarms and maintenance condition.
  3. Handle the sample consistently. Use the correct container and collection method for the parameter. Minimise delay, warming, aeration, bubbles and contamination where these can affect the result.
  4. Allow readings to stabilise. Follow each instrument’s instructions rather than writing down the first displayed value. Note temperature, flow or other process conditions that could explain a change.
  5. Repeat and record. Take repeat portable readings where appropriate and record the time, location, operator, equipment identity, calibration/check information and observations.

This routine makes the portable test useful beyond the immediate reading. It gives the next operator, supervisor or service engineer a record that can be reviewed alongside the online trend.

What to do when readings disagree

Start by checking whether the two results genuinely describe the same condition. Sampling-point differences, delays, temperature, bubbles, poor mixing, fouling, reagent condition and analyser response time can all contribute. Check portable calibration or verification evidence as well as the online analyser’s current status and maintenance history.

Do not repeatedly adjust the fixed analyser until the cause is understood. Repeat the comparison according to the site process, inspect the sample path and sensor condition, and escalate persistent or significant differences for service, method review or laboratory investigation. PMA can provide instrument service and calibration support where an analyser needs further assessment.

Using portable testing in Section 82 support work

Portable testing can be helpful during incident response, upstream and downstream checks, commissioning support and the collection of an audit trail. It gives operators a practical way to document an independent field observation while the wider monitoring programme is reviewed.

A portable water testing kit for Section 82 monitoring support can be configured around the parameters and workflow that matter to a team. The kit does not itself make a programme compliant and it is not a replacement for fixed continuous monitoring. Programme obligations, approved methods and acceptance decisions remain with the responsible organisation.

Choosing and trialling the right kit

Choose equipment around the actual parameters, expected ranges, site conditions and recording process. A team working across several locations may value a consistent portable workflow, while a commissioning team may need a different combination of measurements and reference materials. The wider portable water quality analyser range can help identify the appropriate options.

Before routine use, agree how the portable result will be compared, recorded and acted on. A short controlled trial can confirm whether the instrument, consumables and workflow fit the practical needs of the site.

Discuss a portable testing configuration

Request a trial of the Lovibond portable water testing kit and ask PMA to configure it around your parameters, sites and verification workflow. You can also discuss a portable testing configuration with the team before selecting equipment.
