Sulphide

Sulphide (or sulfide) is an inorganic anion of sulphur and when dissolved in water, can be very aggressive and lead to corrosion. They can also lead to odour issues.

In the wastewater industry, sulphides can be measured online to monitor odour issues or as an early warning measurement in sewers. In sewers, the presence of sulphide can lead to sulphuric acid generation which can damage the sewer infrastructure.

The most common method for determining sulphide concentration is the methylene blue colorimetric method as this has a low detection limit. In sewer networks or at a wastewater treatment works, a better approach is often the use of UV spectroscopy as the sensor can be dipped directly in the medium and does not consume reagents.

In the oil and gas industry, sulphides are measured to define the concentration of sulphide in ‘sour water’ prior and after removal via stripping.
