Chromium

Chromium is a metal typically used in the production of stainless steel. There are two forms that are commonly found in the environment, Chromium III and Chromium VI. Chromium III is typically viewed as non-toxic as opposed to chromium VI which is highly toxic. Chromium VI is often found at relatively high levels on former chromium production sites and as such may leach into watercourses if left untreated.

Using the diphenylcarbohydrazide chemistry, both total chromium and chromium VI can be determined (and by calculation, chromium III also).

The method is based on measurement of the violet colour formed between chromate III ion (Cr3+) and diphenylcarbazide.
